Global pop-superstar Taylor Swift has been angering many football fans as of late. Swift has recently made her relationship with Kansas City Chiefs football star, Travis Kelce, public. Being a supportive girlfriend, Swift has attended games with Kelce’s family and her parents, and the NFL has been taking full advantage.
During any given Chiefs game, you can see the jumbotron focused on Taylor during any break in the game; some streaming networks have even gone as far as to add a “Taylor-cam” during games, with a camera focused on her the entire time.
Many are mad at Taylor for having as much screen time as the players, but none of this is her fault. Swift attends games just like any other girlfriend or wife of players on the team. She just happens to be one of the most popular and profitable celebrities in the world.
Since Swift has been attending games, the NFL and the Kansas City Chiefs have made an additional 333.15 million dollars, just off of her appearances at games, according to the New York Post. The NFL is purposefully swinging the camera in her direction to make more money. It’s a marketing tactic, and it’s working.
If you’ve been on any social media lately you know that many are tuning into Chiefs games just to see Taylor. This only causes the NFL to show Taylor more because they know they’re gaining viewers and making more money off of her presence. They’re catering to the new demographic of people watching games: Swifties. Some have even said that the music playing before games is changing to bands and artists that are known to be liked by Taylor Swift’s fan-base such as Olivia Rodrigo and Boygenius. Some football fans are mad about this, but what do they expect? Taylor Swift is worth 1.1 billion dollars and is Spotify’s most listened to artist of 2023. She’s going to be popular and profitable everywhere she goes.
No one’s mad when other celebrities are in relationships with players; look at Simone Biles and her husband Jonathan Owens, who plays for the Green Bay Packers, No one is destroying her posters or products when she’s flashed on the jumbotron.
Many are so mad they have even gone as far as to smash Taylor’s albums and stop rooting for the Chiefs. However, no one has destroyed a Kelce jersey or stopped listening to Taylor because Travis attended a concert, and Travis Kelce has attended many, as Taylor is currently on tour.
Long story short, football fans shouldn’t be mad at Taylor for being used as a marketing tactic by the NFL. If you don’t like seeing Taylor be mad at the NFL, not at her.
