For seniors on the ELHS field hockey team, the appointment of new interim head coach Laura Mackey is a pivotal moment: their third new head coach in four years.
Although Coach Mackey is new to the role of head coach, she is no stranger to ELHS field hockey. Born and raised in EL, Coach Mackey started playing at ELMS, continuing through high school and at the collegiate level at Division 1 Kent State University. Last year, Coach Mackey returned as a volunteer coach at ELHS
Following an offseason of uncertainty about who will coach the team, Coach Mackey says she was appointed interim head coach with the understanding that coaching the team would be a combined effort amongst a group of five ELHS graduates: Daven Roberts ‘19, Katie Durkee ‘19, Amy Lloyd ‘99, Julie Horner ‘88, and Coach Mackey ‘81 herself. All five women played at ELHS and at the university level.
“We all share a passion for the game, and each bring different skills and strengths. Our goal is to be a strong and confident team that plays the best field hockey possible,” Coach Mackey said.
According to captain Gracie Lloyd, the changes in coaches have been “a lot of adjustment in a short period of time…It’s been great to have a familiar face.”
Coach Mackey understands that “every transition has its challenges,” but believes that with open communication and commitment the players will adjust well.
“My priority is ensuring [the players] feel supported throughout the process,” Coach Mackey said.
According to captain Addison Kan, “Coach Mackey brings a ton of observant advice. She really knows what she’s talking about and having her has been great for the team.”
Despite the challenges of coaching transitions, both Coach Mackey and the team have high expectations for this season.
“Winning ECC’s would be a phenomenal end to our senior season,” Lloyd said.
Coach Mackey believes that the key to a successful season and an ECC win is communication.
“I’m going to encourage open dialogue and self-reflection… I want players to feel empowered to contribute to the team’s success,” Coach Mackey said.
Outside of field hockey, Coach Mackey is a judo sensei and ran the EL Judo Club through the parks and rec department. She also enjoys traveling to see her three daughters who live across the country.
“I’m excited to see what the season brings. “I’m fully committed to this team and to helping each player reach their full potential,” Coach Mackey said.
