After school, the tennis courts don’t draw much of a crowd, but the ELHS boys’ tennis team never fails to put on a
strong show.
Consisting mainly of sophomores and juniors, the team is currently undefeated. Gaining experience and improving with each match, the team continues to grow and develop together.
“We’re always at the fence supporting each other during matches, and everyone stays to watch every single match instead of going home to do schoolwork,” senior and captain Eric Lovering (record 7-0) said.
The level of support on the team has helped create a stronger dynamic and keeps players motivated during matches. The encouragement from teammates plays a crucial role in how the team performs, especially during intense matches.
“Our captains are good communicators and good motivators, which helps the team get going,” head coach Susan
Welshock said.
Assistant coach Mike Abate also added that “the camaraderie amongst the players pushes them to improve.”
While the team has found success this season, there is still high competition, with players facing demanding and
stressful matches.
“It’s most stressful when there’s a tiebreaker, and everybody is watching you. All eyes are on you,” junior Aaron Huang (record 6-1) said. “When I feel pressured, I bounce the ball a couple times and take deep breaths. I also try not to look at the people around me.”
Intense moments like these require the players to stay focused, especially during close matches or tiebreakers. Learning how to handle these high pressure situations has played a major role in the team’s development this season.
Beyond the pressure of the matches, the players say that the experience of playing tennis has helped them grow mentally.
“This team has taught me the importance of determination and perseverance. You always have to stay driven and motivated,” Huang said.
Furthermore, compared to other sports at ELHS, the tennis team tends to receive less recognition from the student body. Matches are quieter, with a smaller crowd. However, this hasn’t affected the tennis team’s morale.
“At the end of the day, we are a very hard working team, and I want the boys to look back at the season and have something to be proud of,” Lovering said.
As the season continues, the team remains focused on maintaining its success and continuing to improve. With the overall positive environment, the players are gaining confidence in each and every match.
