Bundles of colorful yarn. Unique knit creations. A welcoming community. At ELHS’s Knitting and Crochet Club, with
the help of club members, you can create anything you want.
“Not being afraid to try is always a good thing. I teach beginners and adults, and I hear stories about people getting taught in the past and getting yelled at. I tell them ‘there’s no knitting police.’ It’s okay to practice and it’s okay to make mistakes. just enjoy it for the hobby that it is. The more time you practice, the better you get,” Ms. Buckley said.
Senior Olivia Smith started the club during the 2021-2022 school year. The club accepts and practices a variety of crafts such as knitting, crochet, and cross stitch. Club advisor Holly Buckley is an avid knitter and Smith is a talented crocheter, both of whom have taught many club members the trade.
Last year, the club had roughly 15 members who shared a love for knitting and crocheting. The club gladly accepts beginners and is willing to teach anyone who is interested in learning how to knit or crochet.
“We have boxes of materials so people will come in and find things or if they want to learn we will teach them the basics. If you want to learn we will start you going, no worries at all,” Ms. Buckley said.
Ms. Buckley learned to knit from her sister and regularly knits in her free time. Ms. Buckley also teaches people how to knit at Driftwood Yarns.
The Knitting and Crochet Club has a supportive environment, perfectly suited for any beginner who wants to learn.
“I joined because my friends mentioned it and I wanted to learn. It’s a really chill and nice environment. I crochet a lot now so I really value my time there,” junior member Jane Campbell said.
Meetings last year were held on the second and fourth Friday of the month during advisory in Ms. Buckley’s room (B202). It is not required to attend each meeting and members are welcome to come and go.
