Election Day in EL was on one side a shock, and on the other side, completely expected. First Selectman democratic candidate Dan Cunningham won by only 93 votes(2,747-2,654) over republican challenger Anne Santoro. He will become the first democratic EL First Selectman since 2005, when democrat Beth Hogan beat long-tenured republican First Selectman Wayne Frazier.
The Board of Selectmen stayed red. Republicans Candice Carlson, Rose Ann Hardy, and Don MacKenzie won their respective seats, with Hardy being the only incumbent. Democrats Ann Cicchiello and Jason Deeble won with Cicchiello being an incumbent.
Other Boards such as the Board of Education (BOE) went Democratic. For the BOE republicans, incumbents Jaime Barr Shelburn and Eric Bauman were re-elected. BOE Democratic incumbents Jill Carini, Cate Steel, and Esteban Garcia won re-election.
Overall, this election turned the tide of town politics. Every board within the town turned blue, except the Board of Selectmen. The voters wanted and got a change in the EL municipal government.
