- Olivia Rodrigo
Olivia Rodrigo took a little break from music after her release of “Sour”, and in 2023, she released her album “GUTS”. Comparing “GUTS” to “Sour”, this album was no disappointment. Nominated for 6 Grammys, with songs like “vampire”, “get him back”, “lacy” and “logical”, Olivia Rodrigo is back on track to where she once was, peaking with this album at #1. Although it was one singular album, it’d be wrong to say that she didn’t overtake most of the other artists with just this album.
When asked about how she writes her song in an interview with Jimmy Kimmel, she says that:
“I treat my songs like a diary.”
Fans have been saying that they enjoy listening to Rodrigo’s music due to her being very relatable, and her saying that she writes her song as if it was a diary just establishes that for her even more.
2. Taylor Swift
2023 was a very big year for Taylor. For people who don’t know, she is rereleasing her past albums, but making it the way she always wanted to. She had lost the right to 6 of her albums, alongside control due to a feud with her music manager. These “Taylor Versions” are her releasing them and getting the right to her album, and ultimately putting them out there the way that she wanted them. She had three releases, being “Speak Now” and “1989” (Taylor’s Version), as well as releasing Midnight’s “The Til Dawn Edition”. Not to mention everything with NFL star Travis Kelce. Also, during 2023, she performed her Era’s tour. Already midway through and still continuing, she has done a lot to prepare for this tour.
“Every day I would run on the treadmill singing the entire setlist out loud.”
3. Don Toliver
Don Toliver has taken a huge step in 2023. With the release of “Lovesick”, he has solidified himself to have the ability to make solo songs, instead of being a feature mastermind. Although he didn’t drop as much music as Swift, Don Toliver reached amazing numbers with his song “Private Landing” featuring Justin Bieber and Future, as well as “Embarrassed” featuring his duo, Travis Scott. Peaking at #74 on the charts this year. In an interview, Don Toliver mentions that his album was meant to reach out to the disco community. This opened up a new side of fans that Toliver hasn’t seen yet, and he didn’t disappoint them. I feel that in 2023, Don Toliver is having a year that we can compare to his 2019 run.
