- Lovesick
Don Toliver in the past three years has built himself up in unfathomable ways. He first began blowing up in 2020 with his album “Heaven or Hell,”, which has songs like “After Party”, “Cardigan” and his most popular solo-track in “No Idea.”. Ever since this album, it has become easy for Don Toliver. He mostly shines on his features for bigger artists, but in 2023, he shut down the debate that he could only perform to a high level as a feature. When Lovesick dropped, it didn’t have a large build up like most artists his size. However, the aftermath of the album was seen as songs like “Private Landing” featuring Justin Bieber and Future, “Embarrassed,” featuring Travis Scott, “4 Me” and “Bus Stop” getting the attraction that they deserve.
2. Red Moon in Venus
Before 2023, Kali Uchis never had the attention she deserved. She began gaining popularity in 2018 with her album “Isolation”. People knew of her and her songs, however most people would just listen to her for singular songs, and don’t become in-depth fans. Her hit song on this album is arguably “Dead to Me,” and most listeners didn’t dive deeper into the rest of her songs. In 2023, the narrative has completely changed. With “Red Moon in Venus”, her songs “Moonlight”, “Deserve Me”, “Fantasy” and “Worth the Wait” have blown up and her fan base has grown to what I believe it should’ve always been. She has a very unique style in her music, combining solid production and beats with her unique voice. This makes her a standout artist, and why her album was one of the best in 2023.
3. UTOPIA
UTOPIA wasn’t as good as it was anticipated to be. There was a 5-year wait for this album, so expectations were very high. Although this take is somewhat true, it still doesn’t mean this isn’t a good Travis Scott album. The album opens with “HYAENA”, which is the best album introduction this year. There is a large variety of music on this album, for example we see Travis Scott stepping out of the rap game with “MODERN JAM”. All around, this album isn’t what it was expected to be. However, this doesn’t mean this album was a complete miss. Songs like “TELEKINESIS” makes it easy to stand on a statement like this, with a feature from Future and SZA. Debuting at #1 on the Billboard 200, as well as having all 19 of his songs charting on the Billboard 100, it is safe to say that this album was a success.
