Running is a sport that demands more than physical talent. Your strongest asset must be your mind. No matter how many miles you put in or hours you train, if your mind isn’t able to compete, none of your training matters.
“The mental aspect of running is single handedly the most important part of the sport. You can lose the race even before you have started,” East Lyme XC coach Mike Flynn said. Coach Flynn has led the boys’ XC team to numerous wins this season. The team secured a state title during ECC’s, sending them to Bangor, Maine to compete against many highly ranked schools in New England.
The boys ran exceptionally, making them the 6th fastest team in New England. It’s impossible to point fingers at who’s responsible for their success. Many people search for a single, where, what, or who, but in reality it’s a combination of many factors.
“The boys’ success has come from their pure talent and commitment,” coach Flynn said.
For the boys’ cross country team, hard work and commitment is a consistent theme. The boys’ season starts in early June with summer training, laying the groundwork needed for a successful season.
“Our season is heavily weighted on the running during the summer, the base we build ensures we have enough time to get fit in the season,’’ varsity runner and junior, Sean McCauley said.
McCauley has had an exceptional season and helped the team reach new heights. Being on varsity and consistently qualifying for higher rankings comes with an exceptional amount of physical and mental pressure.
To deal with this, McCauley explains how keeping a healthy mindset is crucial. The most important aspect he stressed was the importance of finding enjoyment and fun in the sport, no matter the outcome.
Another paramount aspect he stresses about the sport is mental toughness. The boys’ XC team has a competition season lasting upwards of three weeks. This is harsh on their minds as well as bodies.
“Mentally, we have to flip a switch when it comes to championship season. We have to not only make sure we are treating our bodies right, but also keep the environment positive,” McCauley said.
During this period of time McCauley did all the important prep, such as eating right, getting good sleep, and icing to make sure he was prepared for the competitions.
“I’m on an amazing team with an amazing coach, so I’m in an environment where it’s hard to be negative in general. We all contribute to our success as a team, I’m grateful for them all,” McCauley said.
The East Lyme boys’ cross country team has been incredibly successful this year. What they are able to achieve with nothing more than commitment and a passion is truly incredible.
