“I’m a hard worker,” Bucko said.
Key Club Advisor Danielle Holsapple agrees, “There aren’t many things [Evan] hasn’t done… He’s always the very first person to sign up for anything,” she said.
So far this year, Bucko has volunteered his time from ringing bells for the Salvation Army outside of Walmart to helping set up ice cream socials at local schools.
Bucko’s hard work recently earned him the role of Lieutenant Governor of Key Club.
As a sophomore.
The position involves overseeing East Lyme, Waterford, Ledyard, and Groton’s Key Clubs. Anyone who participates in Key Club in any of those districts could have applied, but Bucko was unanimously voted into the position by a committee of local Key Club leaders.
As Lieutenant Governor, Bucko must communicate between local Key Clubs and ensure each club’s officer roles and duties are fulfilled.
Bucko also communicates from the national Key Club organization to the local groups, sending out a monthly newsletter to every town. He meets with every district quarterly, and goes to conferences all over New England every two months.
At these conferences, he interacts and makes connections with other leaders, and completes service projects.
“You can choose different workshops at each conference based on your interests. For example, at my first conference I’m going to check out the ‘Turning Your Stress Into Success’ workshop and ‘Key Club 101,’ Bucko said.
Between volunteering, coordinating, and traveling, Bucko has little time in his schedule to relax.
“It’s a huge time commitment,” Ms. Holsapple agreed. However, Bucko is prepared for the challenge.
“I’ve contributed a lot to the club already, so I think this will be a good opportunity for me to get even more involved,” Bucko said.
According to Ms. Holsapple, she and the committee that voted Bucko into the position knew Evan was right for the job because “he already had some ideas, he had done the background work to look at what was needed… He was excited and ready to take on a challenge.”
Bucko added that he enjoys Key Club because he “want[s] to help the community…I try to put in as many [volunteer] hours as possible. It’s kind of difficult because I have practice every single day. If there’s any [volunteering] outside of the club that I can do, I’ll also try and do that if I have the time,” Bucko said.
Ms. Holsapple added that she’s “really excited to watch [Evan] grow in his leadership, and to see what awesome ideas he can bring to East Lyme’s Key Club.”
