Balancing one sport can be challenging for most student-athletes. Junior Sylvi Otter has taken on three: gymnastics, swimming, and track. Her hard work and dedication has led to major achievements, including winning the Class M state title in diving, earning ECC Most Valuable Member for the swim team, and being named The Day All-Area Swimmer of the Year.
Otter’s athletic journey began at a young age. She started gymnastics when she was about 5 years old, inspired by her older sister. Years later, she joined swimming through local programs. Eventually, she tried diving during middle school when her coach encouraged her to compete for extra team points at a state meet. That experience led her to continue diving at club level and eventually becoming one of the top divers in the state. Otter also joined track recently, deciding to take on a new challenge.
Her background in gymnastics plays a major part in her success as a diver. Being a gymnast has given her “strong
air awareness and helps [her] face mental blocks that come with diving,” Otter said. Knowing how to flip and twist and “throw herself around” made learning advanced dives easier and helped her gain confidence quickly.
Winning the Class M state title was a huge moment for Otter: “I felt extremely excited and proud knowing that my
name would be recognized on a banner in the pool alongside my brother.” For her, the recognition was both a personal achievement and a reminder of how far she has come as an athlete.
Otter’s swim coach and ELHS science teacher, Holly Buckley, described Otter as “adventurous and willing to push herself beyond her comfort zone.” According to Ms. Buckley, she works hard both in and out of the pool and often moves directly from swim practice to diving practice without complaint. Otter “listens very carefully to feedback and consistently makes an effort to improve, which motivates her teammates to work harder as well,” Ms. Buckley said.
Due to Otter’s courage in trying new dives, other swimmers are often inspired to push themselves as well.
During competitions, Otter stays focused and handles pressure well. Even if a dive doesn’t go perfectly, “she quickly
moves on and concentrates on the next performance,” Ms. Buckley said. Otter shared that she visualizes her dives before competitions and uses music to stay focused between events.
Balancing three sports is not easy. During swim season, she often goes from swim practice to diving practice and then to club training or gymnastics meetings. She manages her busy schedule by using her travel time to complete any homework and staying organized throughout the week.
Despite the challenges, Otter remains motivated by her desire to improve and reach new goals. She hopes to continue
diving in college and enjoys seeing her progress over time. Through dedication, resilience, and a love for competition,
Otter has become a standout athlete and an inspiration to her teammates.
