Reese Georgian (Underdog)
Reese Georgian joined the ELHS wrestling team this winter. As a freshman, he stepped into a highly competitive, demanding, individual sport, and had no trouble making his presence felt in the 150 weight class, earning a nomination for ECC Athlete on Dec. 29. His nomination was for going 4-0 on his Avon Duals after pinning an opponent and tech falling another.
“It’s just you and the other person on the mat, so it’s up to you if you want to win or if you want to give up,” Georgian said.
Georgian is ranked 9th in the state (in his weight class), the highest ranked freshman in his division, with a record of 30-7.
Abby Mikolinski (Standout)
Walking onto the mat, Abby Mikolinski stands out not only for her records, but for being the only girl on the wrestling team.
Mikolinski started at only 5 years old. She not only got nominated for ECC Athlete of the Week on Jan. 19, and
placed second in the 185 weight class in the first ever girls’ wrestling ECC tournament. This is not just a milestone
for her, but for girls’ wrestling as a sport.
Mikolinski said the biggest challenges she faces are internal.
“If I start looking at who I’m wrestling, I lose before I even step on the mat,” Mikolinski said.
She doesn’t let setbacks get to her. Instead, they fuel her and push her to be better. So far, she has a record of 12-3.
