With pride, passion, and honor, Izel Delgado is living her dream: wearing her country’s jersey on her back while playing for Ecuador’s national soccer team.
As only a sophomore in high school, Delgado’s talent and skill has earned her an opportunity to represent her mother country.
“She’s got leadership, talent and a positive attitude,” girls’ soccer coach Rachel Redding said. “Izel’s got some of the best skills I’ve seen in a really long time.”
Delgado first found her passion for soccer at a young age, after seeing her father and older brother play. As time passed, she felt driven to work harder, improving her skills, and eventually earning herself a spot on Ecuador’s national team.
“It felt so incredible wearing my country’s jersey for the first time,” Delgado said. “I felt so honored and proud of all of my hard work. My family was also very passionate and proud.”
Perseverance, discipline, and time management were also key to Delgado’s success. Since Delgado is always playing soccer, she spends the remainder of her time staying up late doing homework or going to after school activities, enforcing her to maintain a healthy school life balance.
“It’s either I’m in school, or I’m just out training, so I feel I have to have a balance between the two, and it’s really hard sometimes because I also have to stay up late and do work,” Delgado said.
Along with the national Ecuador soccer team, Delgado also makes a significant impact on the ELHS girls’ soccer team. Her collaboration and communication skills enhance the team on and off the field.
“The team’s whole mindset changes when Izel’s on the field,” senior and captain Kaylee Knapp said. “Knowing Izel’s
always there when I put the ball through gives me so much confidence.”
Furthermore, Delgado’s optimism and humbleness motivates her teammates. She teaches other players to learn how to play off of her, strengthening the team.
“She’s always there to help her teammates and works hard in practice,” coach Redding said.
As colleges begin to scout Delgado, she plans to continue playing soccer and pursue her dream of playing in the World Cup.
