During their freshman year, alongside their older siblings, seniors Alex Rindell and Xavier Stefanski founded an organization called Vikings Play it Forward.
“The goal of our organization is to make sports available to anyone who wants to play, regardless of their economic status,” president of the organization Alex Rindell said.
Over the past four years, the group has collected used sporting equipment from high schoolers who have graduated or from anyone who no longer has use for their equipment. They then devote hours to organizing the equipment in a storage facility before giving it away to those who need a little extra help. The group plans on having a large giveaway event in the spring.
“We just want to do everything we can to give everyone the chance to participate in the sport they want to play without having to worry about the cost of the gear,” vice president Stefanski said.
The group also collects donations which go toward scholarships for ELHS students.
“I think it’s amazing just because sports are such a huge part of my life, and I’m luckily privileged enough to be able to afford all the equipment and get involved. On the other hand, there’s kids out there who love it just as much as me but don’t really get the opportunity. I think it’s a beautiful thing that we’re able to give that opportunity to those people who aren’t as privileged,” volunteer and senior Julianne Guarraia said.
The community has largely supported Rindell’s organization. Recently, Norm Higgins, the owner of Connecticut Sporting Goods, reached out to Vikings Play it Forward to see if they would like all of his leftover East Lyme clothing and equipment as he enters retirement. The organization received approximately 20 bags full of jackets, shirts, sporting equipment, and more. Everything the organization received will be donated to athletes who will benefit from the items.
“As an athlete myself, I love encouraging others to get involved in sports and providing embroidered clothing helps everyone feel included and supported. This club has taught me so many lifelong lessons about the impact of giving back,” volunteer and senior Emma Stoddard said. The organization is looking for volunteers and would be happy to hear from athletes at ELHS looking to get involved.
