Standing on the choir risers in the orchestra room, students face the glare of the stage lights and the pressure of performing in front of a crowd. For a moment, panic sets in – until the music begins and confidence takes over.
“Performing can be stressful. Some people suffer from a lot of stage fright or anxiety. The goal of the open mic is to create an informal environment for students to share their talents,” ELHS orchestra teacher Emily Lattanzi said.

As a former ELHS student herself, Ms. Lattanzi remembers open mic nights as welcoming events where students could perform without the pressure of competition. While she enjoyed performing with choir groups, she also appreciated opportunities to showcase her own individual talents.
While Ms. Lattanzi returned to ELHS as a teacher, she wanted to recreate that same atmosphere for today’s students. With the help of the Viking Vanguard, who volunteered their time to organize the event, the open mic night made its return.
By the end of the night, the open mic was more than just a performance – it became a space where students could step outside their comfort zones, support one another, and share their talents without fear of judgment.
Open Mic Night: Friday, May 29 (6-8 p.m.) in Room D130. $5 fee includes treats.
