They say April showers bring May flowers, but by the time June rolls around, the ELHS Gardening Club is planning on bringing more flowers to the school’s main entrance, in order to make a more vibrant and colorful campus for all.
“We want to make the school look more welcoming, and to get people more excited to come to school,” junior and co-president of the club Giuliana Vacca said. Vacca is incredibly excited to be working on the project, one of the biggest the Gardening Club has done, with the dozen or so active members the Gardening Club has. The other members are also just as excited as she is.
“It’ll be one of the best things we’ve ever done in the club; it’s going to be so much fun,” junior and club member Kylie Gentile said. The club has already finished the planning process, with help from everyone from ELHS custodial staff (who took out the dead bushes that were already there over spring break) to UConn’s Soil Nutrient Analysis Laboratory (who tested the soil to determine what flowers will grow best.) The finished project is expected to include rows of maroon and white flowers that will bloom from spring to fall, ensuring students will get the most time to see them, as well as a bench for people to sit and admire the garden.
“The garden will bring some new life to a part of the school that didn’t have a lot beforehand,” Vacca said. “It’ll be fresh, something new for people to see.”
For those looking to give the club a hand, the Gardening Club meets Monday and Friday advisories in room A211 with Mme. Miller, who is always excited to welcome new members.
“As a club, we’re definitely a really inclusive community. We’re really accepting and want to spread more love throughout the school,” Mme. Miller said. Whether you’re a beginner gardener or have two green thumbs, the Gardening Club is always open for anyone who enjoys green gardens and good vibes.
