“The Black Point Market is probably my favorite place to go in the summertime. When it opens in the spring it’s like it’s the unofficial start of summer,” junior Teagan Dunne said.
Home to sandwiches, ice cream, jewelry, clothes, and more, the Black Point Market has been the heart of the Black Point community for almost 96 years.
Many patrons were concerned the market would close for good when it was put up for sale in 2022, but thankfully current owners Steve and Michele Albert decided to invest in the community and reopened the market in the summer of 2023.
“Most everyone has been very welcoming. I love the social aspects of the job… I think people really appreciate what we’re doing here,” owner Steve Albert said.
The Alberts have four children, two of whom work side by side with their parents at the market several days a week in the summertime.
“I love working [at the Black Point Market]. Most people who come in are really nice, and you get to know everyone because so many people really love the store,” Steve and Michele’s oldest daughter Keira Sehl-Albert said.
For the past two summers, the Alberts have been making adjustments to the store whilst ensuring it keeps its old-fashioned feel, and others agree that it’s been working.
“The Alberts have done a great job with the place. They’re always making little changes and improvements,” Black Point Market employee and ELHS senior Dylan Joyce said.
Changes the Albert’s have implemented include the addition of pizza, a bigger grill, and plenty of new mementos for sale, including paintings done by Ms. Albert.
“Everyone should come check it out. I promise I make great sandwiches,” Keira said. And for anyone concerned about the Black Point Market being put up for sale once again, Mr. Albert assures he will “keep [the Market] running for another hundred years, or at least get it headed in that direction.”
