The beating sun, thousands of people, long lines, and tiring nights were all well worth it for this music festival. Under the Big Sky was truly a one of a kind experience.
Montana is truly a unique place to be, the ranch and the festival is only a few minutes from Glacier National park. Not only was there amazing music, but there were also several rodeos each day.
The two stages on a farm, positioned perfectly in front of the mountain ranges made for an incredibly unique experience, along with the smaller stage with a creek near the pit. The headliners, The Red Clay Strays, Mumford and Sons, and Tyler Childers were nothing short of amazing. Perhaps the best part of the festival was exploring newer artists of folk, country, and some of rock and roll.
Houndmouth put on an excellent experience, as the band looked like they were thoroughly enjoying their time performing together. Wyatt Flores is another favorite, his band seamlessly blending together with his unique Oklahoma style country music. I loved many of the artists, already huge fans of them before coming to the festival, but the true reason I wanted to go was because of Tyler Childers. Walking out onto the stage, a ball jar filled with water in hand, Childers and his band were clearly excited to be there. One of the first songs they played is my personal favorite, “Shake the Frost.” It’s a slow and sad song, but most of the crowd knew it. The screens behind Childers and his band featured an animated video for each song. Each video was unique and true to Childers’ music. Childers even played his famous, yet unreleased song “Jersey Giant,” which is a huge fan favorite.
It was so unreal to be in the pit so close to him. The food was delicious, as was the fresh squeezed lemonade, perfect for hot days. Friday was warm, but thankfully, Saturday and Sunday cooled off for an enjoyable experience.
