Student Life: What podcast are you listening to and why?

Sra. Garcia:

“I am listening to a podcast about Lyme disease which is called ‘Patient Zero: Lyme Disease’ from New Hampshire Public Radio. I just came across it and thought it was interesting because I know a lot of people who have had Lyme disease and growing up in this area I’ve always been very cautious about ticks. First, I learned about the anatomy of a tick and that it takes approximately 24 to 48 hours for the tick to transmit the bacterium. But they also found that if the tick already fell off one person while feeding and found another person, the time for the bacterium to be active in the human is shorter.”

Ms. Thomson:

“I currently listen to ‘Teaching While White’ which looks at the perspective of white teachers and talks about what we can be doing to support students of color. I am white and Hispanic, and I want to know the systems that are in place in schools to increase equity. I also listened to ‘Cults’ which is a story about lots of different types of cults over time. A lot of it is about how certain leaders get groups of people to buy into their ideas. In this, you can learn about the different psychological methods that they use to keep people in their groups. One of my favorite podcasts is Brene Brown’s ‘Unlocking Us.’”

Megha Nissankararo:

“I browsed around on Spotify to see what is worth listening to and there is this podcast called ‘Anything Goes’ by the YouTuber Emma Chamberlain. It’s basically a podcast about her personality, and how she has gained a huge fan base and a lot of support on YouTube. She also talks about her life, starting from the funny conversations all the way to deep topics, like relationships and friendships. I also listen to the podcasts that we make in Starting the Conversation Podcast Club. I love listening to this to see how much we’ve grown as a club.”

James Chekal:

“I am listening to ‘TrueAnon’ because of the Jeffrey Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell scandal. I chose to listen to this podcast because it is covering the trial of Ghislaine Maxwell who was Jeffrey Epstein’s business partner and friend. The reporters were at the trial every day and they gave a report of what went down in the sex-trafficking case and what it means for the jury. Another one I watched is ‘Nice White Parents’ about the New York City public school system. White parents in New York City have systematically changed the school system every 20 years to cater it to white parents.”
