Viking Saga: How long have you been pole vaulting, and why did you want to start?
Teagan Czaja: I’ve been vaulting since freshman year, and I’ve known I’ve wanted to try it since like elementary
school but didn’t get the chance to until high school. Then I tried it and fell in love with it.
VS: How often do you have pole vault training, and what do you focus on in practice
TC: I usually jump about around 3 times a week and my focus varies on different aspects of my jump depending on what need work from my last competition.
VS: How do you handle pressure at big meets (like State Opens)?
TC: When at meets I try to really focus on staying happy and keeping the mindset that I get to be there rather than spiral over placing and points. Going into State Opens, I didn’t actually think I had a shot at winning, so I just went in with the goal of getting medals and having fun.
VS: What emotions did you feel when you realized you won?
TC: I was in complete shock because like I said I didn’t think I had a shot. I was just so grateful for the experience and filled with joy from doing what I love.
VS: What goals are you setting for next season (and outdoor)?
TC: My big goal outdoors is to break the school record. I’m currently tied with it, so I want to break it and just keep working to get better.
