Viking Saga: Can you describe a moment during this season that made you feel proud of yourself or your team?
Avneeta Basu: I’d say every meet, honestly. My team has been successful over these last few meets, and I’m so
proud of how far we’ve come and how much we learned from each other.
VS: What challenges have you faced in this role as a captain, if any, and how did you overcome them?
AB: There’s a lot of people to work with on the fencing team, new people and returning people. It’s challenging learning to work with people at all skill levels, and best use the skills and the resources of teammates to support the whole team.
VS: What’s something people don’t see about the work you put in outside of matches?
AB: Fencing is a lot of reaction timing and building instincts, so getting the basics down is really important. I’ve been
on the team for four years. Every time we do drills I am still able to improve. Our team is really good at coaching up
everyone to the same level which is important to create a cohesive team.
