Every fall at ELHS, Spirit Week sweeps through the school, with glitter showering on the floor and colored wigs upon heads. Students dress up, each grade competes with one another, and excitement lasts throughout the whole week. But behind all the decor, the students are working toward a much bigger goal: giving back to the EL community.
“While dressing up and pep rally games bring the fun, we emphasize the importance of giving back and helping students understand what it means to be responsible, caring citizens,” full senate advisor Stephanie Jenkins said.
Every box and can of food donated goes directly toward helping families in need, which is especially important with the holidays approaching. This event encourages students to make a positive impact on the town of EL.
“We’re doing this to better our community to bring our school together, and that’s one of the biggest things we want to promote our food drive for,” Class of 2027 president Nitya Bulusu said.
This year, the seniors led the school, as they had the most donations, which was followed by the juniors, then the sophomores, and the freshman.
Spirit Week is always a highlight at ELHS, and it teaches students the value of giving back. This week-long effort to help support families in need makes a significant difference in our community.
The Season of Giving
As Christmas nears, it is unfortunately easy to neglect the cares of the underprivileged amongst such a seemingly endless amount of Holiday cheer.
Nevertheless, in the generosity which is the core of the holiday, it is proper that those who are able ought to provide for those in need; the form is immaterial, but the gesture may indeed be remembered for many Christmases hence.
Mr. Hernandez and the National Honors Society recognizes this need, for they coordinated a Toys for Tots bin, located near the main entrance. Organized by the Coast Guard, the program provides a variety of toys for young children.
Let’s all contribute to those in need this merry season.
